Brian O’Brien worked with J.A. Van Allen on the study of the radiation belts believed to surrounded the Earth. Brian worked on several satellites to help make discoveries in the upper atmosphere, and recently found this article from Van Allen on his insightful Editorial, with a definition of a malfunction, citing Explorer IV while it was fresh.
